How to be happy in real estate: top tips from our top agents
What is it really like to be a real estate agent? It’s a fast paced job with plenty to do and remember. If you’re a people person who enjoys a flexible working life and helping others, it might be a great fit for you.
Like any job, though, real estate can have its ups and downs. How you approach it can make all the difference.
Award-winning agent Nicholas Jacobs, at Independent Woden & Weston Creek, says it’s all about balance.
“It’s easy to end up working 24/7 if you’re not careful, because in real estate there’s always something you can be doing. You have to know when to pull back and make time for yourself.”
“Exercise is essential. When things get busy, I take some time out for a game of tennis or basketball, or even just walking the dog. It’s great stress relief, and it gives me energy to tackle the next task.”
“Our business approach is to put clients first. We work with the person, not the property. When you go the extra mile, your client is really appreciative, and that makes the job more enjoyable. You get a kick out of helping people.”
Fiona Murray from Independent Inner North and City credits her energy to healthy living and exercise.
“You have to have a balance between personal life and work. Real estate is fun, but it’s a tough gig. Work out who you are as a person and what’s important to you, and make that happen.”
“Keep fit and healthy. When I eat healthily, I feel better physically and mentally. It gives me more mental capacity, and also more confidence in myself - which helps me do a great job as an agent.”
“Find a hobby that you love and make time to do it.'
Grahame O'Brien, also from Independent Inner North and City is all about goal-setting and focus.
“Set business goals for yourself. If I know what I want to achieve by the end of the year, I can break that down into monthly, weekly and daily targets. That keeps me feeling in control and focused.”
“A good routine really helps. I exercise each morning before work, which allows me to clear my mind and get ready for the day.”
“Make sure you spend your free time doing something you care about. Spend time with the people who matter.”
Paul Corazza from Independent Gungahlin, takes the long view.
“Be patient: it gets easier. When you’re starting out in real estate, you do work long hours. As you get more experience, you get a lot smarter about how you work and you build momentum. So hang in there!”.
“Remember what you’re doing it for. It’s not about driving the flashy car, it’s about building a career that works for you. Real estate is very flexible and it can offer a great lifestyle.”
“Structure is key. Knowing what you want to get out of the week forces you to get proactive about what you focus on. Make sure the core tasks are done no matter what, and use time efficiently.”
